Police investigate Southampton mischief and Port Elgin impaired driver

Saugeen Shores Police Service suspect two mischief incidents in Southampton that damaged a playing field and windows on the weekend are related.

Overnight Oct. 18 -19 someone drove onto a manicured area at the Helliwell Park Soccer Fields on Grenville St., causing “extensive damage” police said in an Oct.21 press release.

At Southampton Tennis Club on South St., gravel kicked up by a vehicle spinning its wheels in the parking lot  broke three clubhouse windows.

A 28-year-old Southampton man faces lost his licence for 90 days and his vehicle for seven days after a officer witnessed a vehicle ignore a stop sign at the Green and Elgin Streets intersection in Port Elgin Oct. 19 at 1:19 a.m.

When pulled over, the driver showed signs of impairment and failed a roadside test and two subsequent breath tests at the station.

He was charged with driving while impaired, driving with cannabis readily available, driving with an open container of liquor, and fail to stop at a stop sign.

He was held until sober and released with a court date.
