A 47-year-old man was killed in a four vehicle collision on Tuesday, Oct. 2, north of Lacombe Hwy 12 exit.
The Ponoka Integrated Traffic Unit, as well as fire and emergency services were dispatched to the scene at 3:52 p.m., about five kilometres north of the Hwy 12 exit.
According to an RCMP collision analyst who attended the scene, preliminary information indicated that a northbound gravel truck hit the rear of a truck and trailer unit, which then struck a mini van. The mini van entered the centre median while the gravel truck and pick up truck went into the ditch. A fourth vehicle was also struck.
The male drivers of both the gravel truck and mini van were transported by ambulance with non-life threatening injuries, however, the male driver of the pick up truck was pronounced deceased on the scene.
The fourth vehicle that was struck was determined to still be driveable.
RCMP and sheriffs remained on the scene for approximately five hours. While the east lane was blocked, northbound traffic was able to move in the west lane.
The cause of the collision and contributing factors are still under investigation. No further information, including the name of the deceased, will be provided by RCMP.
