Crash caused by impaired driver results in serious injury

An individual remains in critical condition in hospital after being struck by an impaired driver in the Valley yesterday.

Around 6:30 p.m. on Monday, police received a call regarding a serious collision involving multiple vehicles on MR 80 between Cecile Street and Isabelle Street in Val Caron. 

“A Honda traveling towards Sudbury collided with a Kia travelling in the same direction, causing the Kia to spin out and hit a Mercedes on the opposite side of the road,” Greater Sudbury Police said in a release.

The 35-year-old driver of the Kia was ejected from the vehicle and was rushed to hospital, where he remains in critical condition. The driver of the Mercedes sustained minor injuries. 

“While speaking with the driver of the Honda, officers detected signs of impairment,” police said.

The 50-year-old man blew over twice the legal limit and was and charged with impaired operation causing bodily harm. 

Additional charges may be pending, police indicated.

Police were not identifying the accused as the information had not yet been sworn to through the court process. 

He was released on a promise to appear. 

The traffic management unit continues to investigate the incident.
