The Canadian University College (CUC) dove in first place for the Life-Saving Award making the faculty the top performing college in the province for teaching life-saving courses.
"We train people not just for college but for the community," said Lynn Marshall, CUC aquatic director. "Becoming a lifeguard can be a hobby, part-time job or a career anywhere in Canada."
About 20 courses are given each year at CUC in lifesaving. They are offered all-year round Marshall said and can qualify anyone over the age of 16 to be a recognized lifeguard throughout Canada.
Courses include national lifeguard service, first aid, oxygen courses, bronze medallion and bronze cross which both act as a pre-requisite to being a nationally recognized lifeguard — and many more.
The award recognized the Life-Saving Association of the CUC.
Marshall has been the aquatic director at the college for more than 20 years and said individuals from all across Central Alberta between Edmonton and Calgary come to train in life-saving at the CUC.
The program has grown in enrollment and interest over the years she said.
"I love seeing the students start where they are and then finish they end up," she said.
