Depending on information given by residents, Lacombe County may be eligible for a Disaster Recovery Program due to the recent flood.

"We have received a number of phone calls regarding flooding in basements and on land," said Keith Boras, manager of Lacombe County environmental and protective services. "Right now, we are asking people to call our office (and report their claims). We can then gather the information to determine if we qualify for disaster relief."

Any insurable losses will not be covered by the program Boras said. However, things such as overland flooding and ground water pouring in are covered. Anyone with damage is asked to call the county office and leave their name, phone number and damage estimates.

"The county can not implement the program, only administer it," Boras said. "If we qualify, then the program could be initiated."

Early last week, over four inches of rain — a month's worth of rainfall — fell in the Lacombe region creating flooding across the area.

Roads around the Mackenzie River subdivisions, various parks around town and basements, reaped the benefits of Mother Nature. However, Tricia Cooper, communications coordinator for the Town of Lacombe, said no infrastructure damage has been reported.

Cheques have begun to flow in across the province for flood relief and more than 1,900 applications are being processed in southeastern Alberta.

Specific disaster programs have been implemented for the region severely affected by flooding. A $200 million 2010 Southern Alberta Disaster Recovery Program provides assistance for Albertans with severe overland flooding and groundwater seepage following June 15-21 rainstorms.

A $3.5 million 2010 Spring South Eastern Alberta disaster Recovery Program has also provided assistance for Albertans with overland flooding from extreme amounts of snow and rain between April 13 and May 31.

The Disaster Recovery program is province-wide and assists municipalities, small businesses and residents to recover uninsurable losses from severe weather. To submit an application, or for more information call 1-888-671-1111.

To put in a claim with the county office call (403) 782-6601.
