LACOMBE— BMO Bank of Montreal employee Tim Goode will head the Lacombe and District Chamber of Commerce beginning in the new year.
Goode went unopposed for the role of president as the Chamber held their election of executive officers and board of directors during their Nov. 19 annual general meeting. Joining Goode as executive officers for 2010 are Keith Meyers of Lacombe Co-op as vice president, Sunny 94's Murray McRae as second-vice and Angela Law of Meyers Norris Penny as treasurer. Directors include Barb Cross of ATB Securities, Dean Dyck as the EDB representative, Landon Ritchey of Canadian University College, Christi Ferguson-Huston of CHROME Safety Services Ltd., Kelly Treleaven of Investors Group and Kris Verhoeven of the Business Development Bank of Canada.
"I'm looking forward to it," said Goode about his new position, adding that he appreciates the efforts of past president Edie Beach and out-going president Anna Boruck for reorganizing the Chamber and providing a great foundation. "My objective is to move it forward and strengthen it by working with local businesses and businesses in Lacombe County."
A Lacombe resident for more than 10 years, and a person heavily involved in the agricultural sector, Goode talked about the challenge of increasing membership.
"All of the board, and especially the director, it's their mandate to seek new memberships," he said. "The more memberships we have, it makes us stronger."
As for the importance of the chamber, especially in a time of economic struggles for some, Goode said a chamber of commerce in any community is very important and it must operate like a lot of businesses.
"Businesses have to become smarter and leaner just as the chamber has to," he said. "We've had to scale back part of our budget going forward."
Goode added that while there are no new chamber-run events planned, that could change with fresh ideas.
"At the moment, there are no new events planned. But, of course, with a new board there will be new ideas and new possibilities."
