LACOMBE— It's not too often in sports a team gets a second chance in the post season, but that's just what the Lacombe Lasers girls' volleyball team had and they made the most of the opportunity.
After losing their league championship on Nov. 18 in Red Deer, the Lasers went undefeated on Saturday in their home gym, at Ecole Lacombe Junior High School, to take the Central West Alberta Junior High Athletic Association (CWAJHAA) 'JJJ" title.
"I'm really proud of the girls," said head coach Liane Amdan from a tough week, they played awesome all day today. I told them this was a second chance to prove yourselves and they worked hard and played together."
Lacombe defeated St. Dominics, St. Thomas and HJ Cody in the round robin portion of the tournament, Hunting Hills in the semi-final and St. Francis of Red Deer in the final, in a three-game set.
"In that last game, we wanted to grab the momentum and try to intimidate the other team," said Lasers co-captain Laura MacTaggart, who added that her team made a point of being loud and displaying a lot of energy. "We wanted to show them that we were here to win and we were never going to give up."
The Lasers other captain, Naomi Jardine, said losing the league championship during the week was a real wake-up call for her team, making them realize a maximum effort is needed for every point in the playoffs.
"We just saw we could lose if we didn't try our hardest," she said. "It's definitely encouraged us to come out, not take anything for granted and try our hardest."
Like many of their teammates, this was the last game in a Lasers' uniform for both MacTaggart and Jardine. Jardine talked about the last two years with her teammates and finishing it off in style.
"It's has been really good. Last year we had Ms. (Linda) Richter and that was a great year and we wanted to win it for her because it is the Linda Richter Trophy. It was perfect in that we won it for her and our whole team. We have such a great group of girls, there is no way we couldn't have (won)."
