The Central Alberta Christian High School (CACHS) men's basketball team finished off their regular season play with an outstanding 10 - 0 record, giving them the privilege of hosting the zone playoffs Mar. 9 - 10.

"I'd say that the reason for our strength is we have a strong Grade 12 crew," said Veronica Den Oudsten, head coach of the CACHS men's basketball team. "I have four that have played with me for three years."

The CACHS Knights play in the central zone of the 2A provincial basketball league and come March 9 they will be facing off against teams from Rimbey, Pidgeon Lake and many more.

"We've been working all season to be at our best for zones so our goal is to win zones (.) and then be competitive in provincials," said Den Oudsten.

One thing Den Oudsten thinks will be a definite asset when it comes to competition in zones, as well as provincials, is the good balance her team has found.

"We've been playing well, we've been getting tougher and stronger," said Den Oudsten.

While the Knights were very successful in their regular season play, they didn't manage to clinch any titles in the tournaments they played in over the season.

"It seems every tournament we do face a team that beats us so we've had five losses and we've had five tournaments, so every tournament we've had one loss," said Den Oudsten.

But these losses aren't bringing the players down, especially as they head into the zone competition.

"The guys, they work really hard, I think our strength is our defense and I'm very impressed with how hard they are working and working as a team," said Den Oudsten.

Once the winners of the zone playoffs have been decided it's on to provincials in Cold Lake, where the eight zone champions, three wildcard teams and the host team, will all face off for the provincial medals.

"It would be hard to win provincials but we definitely would be able to compete and definitely have a shot at the medal round at provincials if we're able to get there," said Den Oudsten.

Until then you can catch the Knights hosting zone playoffs March 9 - 10 at CACHS in Lacombe. The game schedule will be released shortly.
